Back in his hospital room and still awaiting discharge, Noah decided to use the time to call Leavenworth. He’d called earlier to set up the appointment with Scott Mirch but had been told to call back in the early afternoon, and they would connect him to the commandant. It took a bit of time for them to patch him through, but eventually she answered.

“Colonel Brenda Horton.”

“Colonel Horton, thank you so much for taking time to speak with me,” Noah said.

“No problem. You said this was regarding Scott Mirch?”

“Yes, ma’am. We think there might be a link between Mirch and the mass shooting on our base.”

“I was so very sorry to hear about the tragedy,” Colonel Horton said. “Our hearts and prayers go out to all involved.”

“Thank you.”

“Though I have to say I’m very curious how the two might be related.”

Noah explained the connections they’d uncovered. “It’s a long shot, considering he is in prison, but I learned long ago, if there’s any chance of a connection—”

“You follow it,” she said.

“Yes, ma’am.” He liked the colonel.

“So how can I be of help?”

“What can you tell me about Mirch? Is he a model prisoner or always pushing boundaries?”

“Oh, he’s definitely a model prisoner.”

“Does he interact with many people? Is he close with anyone in particular?”

“He mostly keeps to himself but occasionally interacts with a couple of the prisoners.”

“Does he have many visitors?”

“None,” Colonel Horton said.

“None?” His brows furrowed. “As in never?”

“That’s correct,” she said.

“What about mail, phone calls?” The guy had to have someone who cared.

“Those he gets.”

“Do you know from who?”

“I read through his file before our call to reacquaint myself with his specifics. He gets a weekly call and a letter from the same PO box about once a month—sometimes more.”

“He only gets mail from one person?” Noah rubbed his chin.

“That’s correct.”

“Is there a name on the return address?”

“Unfortunately, no. Just the PO box address.”

“Could I get that from you?”

“Sure. I’ll text it when we hang up.”

“Thank you. And the phone calls?”

“We do random monitoring of the prisoners’ calls. Every time we’ve monitored one of Scott’s, it’s been with a woman.”

“The same woman?”

“Based on her voice, the guards who monitor calls believe so.”

“Any chance you have a number?”

“I’m afraid not. Every time she calls in, the ID says ‘private caller.’”

“Interesting. Thank you so much for your time today. You’ve been very helpful.”

“Happy to be of help. If you think of anything else, don’t hesitate to call.”

“I appreciate that,” he said.

“Would you like me to have Scott Mirch brought on the line now?” Colonel Burton asked.

“Yes.”

After a brief pause, a man cleared his throat. “Hello?”

“Hi, Scott. This is CGIS Special Agent Noah Rowley from Wilmington, North Carolina.”

“Yes?” Scott’s voice cracked.

“I have a few questions.”

“Can I ask what this is in reference to?”

“A mass shooting on our base here in Wilmington three days ago.”

Scott cleared his throat again. “I heard about that on the news. Awful.”

“Yes, it was.” Noah shifted in his seat. A shock of pain shot through his thigh, and he resituated himself.
